Japanese Akoya Cultured Pearls, on the other hand, top out at the 9mm sizes. Consumers looking for larger sized white fine quality pearls usually purchase south sea pearls. Besides being harvested in a different region of the world (Australia versus Japan), South Sea Pearls are cultured in the Pinctada Maxima Oyster (one of the largest oysters in the world), as compared to the Japanese Akoya Cultured Pearl that is cultured in the Akoya Oyster. South Sea pearls are bought and sold using a different grading system than the usual A, A+, AA and AAA nomenclature for Akoya pearls.
