Hap Palmer's
Sammy has the fun, inviting feel of a
Sesame Street segment that cuts away from Cookie Monster and company to temporarily train the camera on real, live kids. What's different about it is that it's essentially a music video--think MTV for 2-year-olds, minus the dizzying camerawork--or a movement participation video. Nine songs from Hap Palmer's classic
Getting to Know Myself album are acted out by a cast of 4- to 8-year-old kids who demonstrate no special talents in the acting or dancing arenas. However, their completely amateurish clowning around to songs such as "Sammy" (about scheming up ways to get to the store other than walking--flying, swimming, and crawling all come to mind) is a plus in that it puts young viewers at enough ease to play along. Standouts on this half-hour video include "Shake Something," featuring a chorus of talented female background vocalists; "Left and Right," a loungy, jazzy number that uses signs and pointing to help the puzzled figure out the difference between the two; and "Circle Game," a rollicking tune that sends kids scurrying in and out of hula hoop-like circles. Palmer's mellow, soothing vocals are a pleasure throughout. Parents who missed Kindermusic sign-up day will want to pick up a copy of
Sammy, and so might those whose kids are on the road to reading. Simple see-and-sing captions float along the bottom of the screen throughout each song, encouraging word recognition and associations.
